About Our School

Thompson Brook School

Thompson Brook School, completed in 2002, is home to the district's fifth and sixth grade students. It is a learning community dedicated to meeting the cognitive, physical, and social-emotional needs of our pre-adolescent population.

Upon entering the wide, bright, and welcoming hall, one feels the caring and senses the respect for the importance of the learning that takes place within. Off the main hall is a sun-lit library stocked with 27,000 plus volumes and a full complement of computers to address the skills and learning levels of fifth and sixth graders. The library is flanked by a computer laboratory on one side and a community room on the other. The gymnasium is complete with an impressive exercise room for an elementary school. The music suite consists of offices, choral room, the strings practice room, as well as the stage occupied by instrumental musicians. All classrooms meet current codes for square footage and are equipped with instructional technology that meets the needs of our students. Classrooms are filled with natural sunlight.

As in any school, the real treasures are the people within. Children thrive in the student-centered environment at Thompson Brook School. Our school has adopted the CARES model for development emphasizing cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy and self-control. Entering fifth graders from Pine Grove and Roaring Brook elementary schools join together to meet those with whom they will travel to high school graduation. Support and guidance assist children in building new friendships and interacting with a challenging curriculum that aligns with the Connecticut State Standards. Children are moving from learning to read to reading to learn.

The teachers are talented, skillful and dedicated professionals. New ideas are welcomed and shared through peer collaboration. Professional staff development opportunities are evident and are in line with best practices, enabling teachers to implement the revised curriculum. The recent additions of instructional coaches supports the refinement of the language arts and mathematics curricula. Teachers work alongside dedicated parents to construct a safe, nurturing, yet challenging environment in which students grow and learn.

Our motto highlights the importance all members place on thinking, creativity and the joyful pursuit of each child's personal best...

"A place to wonder, a wonderful place to learn"
